THE LANTERN CYCLE
PART I
I. The Lantern’s Choosing
(How the Fox Was Bound)
Once upon a time, and twice upon a time, and all the other times I can remember, there lived and breathed a magical forest. It has been known, and I suppose it always will be known, as the Wandering Wood. It’s a place of lost memories that creep in and never leave, of stories told from ear to ear, changing with every new beginning until they are monstrous things only the Wandering Wood can swallow. Deep inside the wood, time is a dance that trips along to its own whimsy, catching you when you least expect it and hurling you back out again, only to discover that the world you once knew had changed irrevocably.
It's a place of incandescence.
Where creatures roam its misty paths. Some you might recognize, others you may not, but stay a while, friend, for tales of bravery and cowardly deeds, of might and trickery are many in the Wandering Wood.
Here is a story! Let it come, let it come…
Our first tale begins in the far reaches of the Wandering Wood, where paths curl like smoke and the trees whisper to their own shadows. They say the Wandering Wood was once a place of gentle flowers and bright-laughing streams, but that was before the forest began swallowing its own paths. Before roots crawled where no roots were planted. Before shadows kept their own counsel.
And before the lantern appeared.
Deep inside the impenetrable center of the wildwood there lived a young fox named Lumen. He was not the strongest fox, nor the fiercest, nor the cleverest. But he was curious—dangerously so—and the forest always rewards curiosity with consequences.
Lumen was born in a winter so bitter the streams froze mid-song. His mother, a fox as soft as dusk, shielded him beneath her tail and hummed old forest lullabies to keep his tiny heart warm. To cover him with song so that the darkest parts of the wood could never find him. His mother had fur the color of autumn leaves—oranges blending perfectly into yellows, into reds. She was a blazing sunset wrapped around the gentlest of hearts. Her love of Lumen kept them both free from shadows, from the ever-watchful trees. They lived a world unto each other, a world spun with sunlight, love, and song.
But one winter morning, as dawn crept pale over the snow, Lumen awoke alone. His mother had vanished in the night and left Luman cold and forsaken. Her voice still rang in his ears, the smell of her still on his fur.
Luman left their den for the very first time that day.
As he wandered, creatures whispered that the forest had taken her. Some said she had wandered into a path that wasn’t meant for mortals. Others said she had been chosen by the old magic.
Whatever the truth, the forest had swallowed her whole.
Luman was now on his own.
Time passed quickly and he grew up with his mother’s last lullaby tangled in his chest, the only soft thing he kept. The world outside his den was hardened like frost-bitten bark, but he continued to wander. He explored and bitterness grew. He disobeyed every rule whispered by trembling mice and fretful wrens:
Do not follow voices you cannot see.
Do not touch what glows without flame.
Do not accept a gift from a branch that wasn’t there yesterday.
Luman would break all three in a single night, for his mother’s voice had abandoned him long ago.
